Teachscape is pleased to introduce an English immersion curriculum for students with little or no English language knowledge. The program, called Language Acquisition Center (LAC) is based on accelerated learning techniques developed by Dr. Georgi Lozanov. School districts using the LAC materials are having great success with the program and have seen a dramatic increase in reading levels for their English Language Learner students.
Language Acquisition Center is a turnkey program that moves students with little to no skills in English to speaking, reading, and comprehending English, and prepares them to be mainstreamed.
About the LAC Program
The Language Acquisition Center's brain-based approach to learning encourages students to speak English in a safe, nurturing environment. Using classroom centers, new material is introduced in a unique way, engaging all the senses, in a relaxed atmosphere that research shows is most conducive to learning.
LAC Program Components
The LAC program includes lesson plans, student workbooks and on-site training that will teach educators how to use each of the curriculum components.
Curriculum has been developed for a one-year immersion program for Grades 4–5 and a six-month immersion for secondary levels. Lessons include phonics, grammar, and other reading and language arts skills, as well as U.S. history. Students use learned information in writing projects and group projects, integrating all learning.
The specific program components include:
- A detailed Lesson Plan Manual that is easy to use, filled with activities that motivate the students to stay engaged and positive
- Consumable textbooks students can keep for future reference, filled with visual clues to help students comprehend new words, mini lessons, and vocabulary pages with illustrations
- Consumable history lessons concentrating on U.S. history to get students on the path to understanding their new adoptive society
- Consumable Language Learning Workbook, which offers supplementary assignments for independent homework that will give students additional opportunities to work on lessons taught in class
- 98 colorful, engaging posters to support the lessons being taught
- Nearly 4,000 full-color picture cards, flashcards, and match game cards to reinforce lessons and teach new words and concepts
