Adolescent Literacy
Adolescent Literary. Routines and Strategies.
The bottom line for all students is that they must acquire the content knowledge needed for life success, as well as meet graduation requirements and be proficient on state exams. That's no small task for students who are struggling readers. It's not that these students lack the ability to understand the content, but that accessing the information through reading is highly challenging.
Developed in partnership with Dr. Don Deshler, Director of the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas ("KUCRL"), this Program of Study builds on his work using the Strategic Instruction Model™ (SIM™). This model encompasses carefully designed research-based routines and strategies to enhance classroom instruction and student learning. SIM™ also includes the Content Literacy Continuum™ (CLC™), a systematic framework for improving literacy instruction in middle and high schools. KUCRL's processes and devices address the important and urgent need to improve content literacy, as well as basic literacy, for upper-elementary, middle, and high school students.
This Program of Study includes onsite coaching for instructional leaders, content-focused observation protocols, and valuable online resources like the following:
- Improving Literacy Instruction in Secondary Schools: Challenges and Solutions - Grades 6-12
This online resource is designed to help teachers of secondary students understand the challenges and complexities of ensuring all secondary students achieve to high standards. It offers research-based strategies, built on the work of Dr. Donald Deshler and his colleagues at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning, to address these challenges.
