Literacy Services

Effective Literacy Instruction. Life Long Learners.

The bottom line for all students is that they must acquire the content knowledge needed for life success, as well as meet graduation requirements and be proficient on state exams. That's no small task for students who are struggling readers. It's not that these students lack the ability to understand the content, but that accessing the information through reading is highly challenging.

The adolescent literacy Program of Study was Developed in partnership with Dr. Don Deshler, Director of the Center for Research on Learning at the University of Kansas ("KUCRL"), this Program of Study builds on his work using the Strategic Instruction Model™ (SIM™). This model encompasses carefully designed research-based routines and strategies to enhance classroom instruction and student learning. SIM™ also includes the Content Literacy Continuum™ (CLC™), a systematic framework for improving literacy instruction in middle and high schools. KUCRL's processes and devices address the important and urgent need to improve content literacy, as well as basic literacy, for upper-elementary, middle, and high school students.

The Online Resouces in literacy are extensive and diverse, featuring the work of Isabel Beck, Reid Lyon, Sally Shaywitz, Louisa Moats, Catherine Snow, Nell Duke, Don Deshler, Connie Juel, Edward Kame'enui, and Michael Pressley. These resources offer a foundational understand of reading at all age levels, building the skills of teachers to develop academic English for their students.
