According to a recent study by the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future, the cost of teacher turnover in American school districts ranges between $4,000 and $17,000 per teacher lost. Turnover particularly undermines at-risk schools which tend to be staffed by newer teachers. The first in the New Teacher Support series, this online resource focuses on developing rules and procedures, setting up the classroom to support instructional goals, and essential teaching practices that will help the new teachers both survive and thrive as they begin their practice. - Building Effective Practice - Grades K-12
This online resource focuses on the essential skills new teachers need to develop to become effective practitioners. These include essential aspects of standards-based practice, such as effective instructional planning, using questioning and discussions as formative assessments, instructional decision making, scaffolding and other aspects of effective practice. - Meeting the Needs of All Students - Grades K-12
In this online resource, the focus is on helping new teachers understand effective ways to diagnose and address the learning needs of the students they teach, including support for ELLs and for students with special education needs. The featured practices are rooted in the content areas of mathematics and literacy.
